Coach Charlie Simmons passes away
Former SFA head football coach Charlie Simmons has died.
The news was confirmed Sunday afternoon by Athletic Director Ryan Ivey.
Simmons was the head coach of the Lumberjacks from 1976-1981 where his teams went 19-44-1.
After his time at SFA, Simmons served as the Precinct 3 county commissioner for Nacogdoches County for 16 years.
Funeral for Charles Wayne Simmons, 88, of Nacogdoches, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 2020, at First United Methodist Church in Nacogdoches, with the Rev. Lorraine Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Simmons died Feb. 23, 2020, in Nacogdoches. He was born Sept. 15, 1931, in Nacogdoches County.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2020, at Cason Monk-Metcalf.
