(8/1/2008) Lumberjack Baseball Signees for 2008

The following have signed National Letters of Intent to join the
Lumberjack baseball team for the 2009 season:

(8/1/2008) Lumberjack baseball signs local talent

Lumberjack head baseball coach Johnny Cardenas has announced the signing of first baseman/thrid baseman Justin McAninch from Nacogdoches High School, continuing a growing trend by the 'Jacks of bringing in local talent. Justin hit .395 in his four-year career at NHS, leading the Dragons to a 23-8 record, the District 12-4A championship and the area round of the playoffs as a senior. He hit .412 with 39 RBI and was recognized as a second-team all-state selection by the Texas High School Baseball Association. He was also recognized as an honorable mention all-state selection at third base by the Texas Sportswriters Association in 2008. The four-year letterman earned first-team all-district each of his final three years as a Dragon -twice as a third baseman and once as a pitcher- and was named the district newcomer of the Year as a freshman in 2005. Justin was not only a standout baseball player for the Dragons but also excelled on the football field and in the classroom. A four-time academic all-district selection in baseball, he finished 13th out of 382 graduates at NHS this past spring. That was after he was named first-team all-district quarterback for District 12-4A in 2006 and 2007, and earning 2005 district newcomer of the year. Congratulations to Coach Cardenas on his signing class.

(7/16/08) SFA baseball adds three more recruits

Lumberjack head baseball coach Johnny Cardenas has announced the signing of another trio of athletes for the 2009 season, going local with the signing pitcher Marty Anderson (Lufkin High School), second baseman/shortstop Garrett Carey (Hutto High School) and utility player Ryan Priest (Pasadena Dobie High School/Alvin Community College).

Marty Anderson: a 6'1", right-handed pitcher who was the Lufkin High School pitcher of the year the past two seasons and helped the Panthers to 5-A bi-district titles in both 2007 and 2008. He was a second team all-district pitcher as a junior and a first-team selection as a senior in 2008, picking up 68 strikeouts in 75.1 innings.

Garrett Carey: Carey was selected to the Class 3A all-state team. He
lead Hutto to a Class 3A Region III championship and a berth in the UIL State Tournament this year. A team captain as a senior, he earned first team all-district as a shortstop after hitting .446 with three home runs and 44 RBI for the Hippos. He was a four-year letterwinner for head coach Pete Schmidt and had success on the mound as well in 2008, posting a 4-1 record with seven saves and a 1.52 ERA. Carey was the District 18-3A Newcomer of the Year as a freshman before earning second team all-district honors as a pitcher in his junior season and first team all-district honors at third base as a sophomore.

Ryan Priest: Ryan was an all-state second baseman at Pasadena's Dobie High School before moving on to Alvin Community College two years ago. He will have two years of eligibility remaining for the SFA and Coach Cardenas expects him to be a "Jack-of-all-trades" with the ability to be utilized as a catcher, third baseman, outfielder or pitcher.

(5/23/08) Lumberjack baseball adds two

The Stephen F. Austin baseball team has added a pair of signee to their list in Tanner Hines and Brett Rogers.

Trent Hines, shortstop, Hudson High School/Jacinto College:Trent
earnied all-conference honors at San Jacinto in 2008. He hit .348 in 51 games in leading his squad to a No. 6 national ranking in the year's final NJCAA national poll. Trent also stole 37 bases in 41 attempts over the last two years, and has not been an easy out having only fanned 22 times in 233 at-bats last season. At Hudson High School, Trent was an all-state selection for former Lumberjack pitcher Glen Kimble and led the Hornets to the Class 3A regional finals in 2005, and the regional semifinals in 2006.

Brett Rogers, pitcher, Wichita Falls Rider High School: Brett was named District 5-4A Pitcher of the Year in 2008 while leading the Raiders to the state playoffs. The right-hander posted outstanding numbers as a senior, going 5-4 with a 1.87 ERA and 99 strikeouts. He only walked seven batters on the year, holding opponents to a .169 batting average in 67 1/3 innings on the hill. As a junior, Brett was a second team all-district selection as a shortstop when hit .318 with 10 doubles and a pair of home runs in 2008, committing only seven errors in over 200 innings on the field. Brett is a well-rounded student-athlete as well, and is scheduled to graduate from high school with a four-year GPA of 3.67. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the student council.
