NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin Athletics mourns the passing of SFA Hall of Fame member and longtime supporter Tom Evans, who passed away Monday evening.
Evans came to SFA in 1954 after two years at Tyler Junior College and was a three year letterwinner for the Lumberjack football team, earning All-Lone Star Conference first team honors in 1955. Evans was drafted by the Baltimore Colts but chose to forgo playing professional football to pursue his master’s degree in education at SFA.
In 1960, Evans began T.G. Evans Construction Company and assisted in the construction and remodeling of a number of SFA buildings, including the Lumberjack weight room and the Stephen F. Austin statue located on campus.
An avid supporter of SFA Athletics, Evans was inducted into the SFA Hall of Fame in 1998 and was a fixture at Lumberjack and Ladyjack games, luncheons and special events. Evans was also a member of the Jacks of Honor as well as a Life Member of the SFASU Alumni Association.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, January 30th at Sunset Memorial Park in Nacogdoches. Memorials may be made in memory of Tom to the SFASU Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, First Baptist Church Building Fund or to Hospice of East Texas.
