SFA Places Seven on All-SLC Teams

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin men’s and women’s cross country teams landed seven student-athletes on the 2015 All-Southland Conference teams, the league office announced on Wednesday morning.

Athletes placing in the top five at the 2015 SLC Cross Country Championships held on Friday, October 30th in Huntsville, Texas were named to the all-conference first team while runners coming in between 6th-10th were given second team recognition.

For the men, junior Charles Mathenge, senior Nick Guerra and junior Colby Mehmen garnered first team accolades after finishing 2nd-4th respectively. Sophomore Jeffrey Weisheit was a second team pick after taking ninth. Senior Cody Brown just missed out on the all-conference label, finishing 11th last Friday to be named to the honorable mention list.

On the women’s side, sophomore Courtney High’s fifth place showing was good enough for the first team. Senior Shelby Pesek and junior Katrina Fite were showcased on the second team for the Ladyjacks by claiming eighth and 10th respectively. Sophomores Taylor Anderson (14th) and Brittany Innis (15th) were honorable mention for SFA.

“Getting seven all-conference selections just shows how hard the team has worked this year,” said cross country coach Cody Clark. “This group has shown tremendous dedication and from a fitness standpoint, it really showed at the SLC meet. For us to have seven in the top ten and to get runner-up is kind of astonishing but that was just how it was this year. Seven all-conference performers is outstanding and I’m proud of all of them.”

SFA’s men/women sweep of second at this year’s conference race was the second straight year for the result. The Lumberjacks posted an impressive 29 points as a team to finish behind Lamar by just two points and the Ladyjacks’ 52 points was nine shy of Abilene Christian.

Mathenge ran the 8,000-meter course in 24:35.9 as the runner-up medalist. Guerra and Mehmen were close behind in 24:37.1 and 24:43.9. Weisheit (25:21.0) and Brown (25:24.4) capped the point scoring for the men and gave SFA an astounding five runners in the top 11.

For the women, High crossed in 21:18.1 to pace the team in the 6k. In her final collegiate conference race, Pesek captured a top ten finish with a time of 21:29.4. Fite edged into the top ten as well with a 21:39.5 mark. Anderson (22:04.3) and Innis (22:08.8) also ran solid times to score points for the Ladyjacks.

SFA will now focus on the 2015 NCAA South Central Regional Meet at Texas A&M on Saturday, Nov. 13. National Championship berths will be on the line when the ‘Jacks compete against the best the region has to offer.
