NACOGDOCHES, Texas - For the second-straight year, and the third time in program history, Stephen F. Austin comprises the field of 68 in the 2015 NCAA tournament. The Lumberjacks drew the #12 seed and will face fifth-seeded Utah Thursday in Portland, Oregon.
The ‘Jacks are closing out another memorable season, sitting at 29-4 overall as SFA captured its third-straight Southland Conference regular season title. The Lumberjacks earned the conference’s automatic bid to the tournament after defeating rival Sam Houston State in the SLC tournament finals Saturday night in Katy, becoming just the third team overall and first in 22 years to capture back-to-back tournament titles.
SFA became a household name during the 2014 NCAA tournament as the 12th-seeded Lumberjacks rallied for a 77-75 overtime victory over fifth-seeded VCU, including Desmond Haymon’s four-point play in the waning seconds of regulation which became one of the iconic moments of the tournament. It is the third NCAA tournament appearance for SFA, posting a 1-2 record with losses to Syracuse (2009) and UCLA (2014).
Utah earned the five seed after posting a 24-8 record and was 13-5 in the Pac-12, finishing third. The Utes are making their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2009 and boast wins against Wichita State, BYU, UCLA and Stanford this season, advancing to the semifinals of the Pac-12 tournament.
