Ladyjacks To Face TCU In WNIT First Round

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - For the first time since 2010, and fourth time in program history, the Stephen F. Austin women’s basketball team has been selected to participate in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) as part of a 64-team field. The Ladyjacks will play Big 12 member TCU on Thursday in Fort Worth, Texas. The game is set to start at 7:00 p.m.

With the invitation to continue play in a postseason tournament, the Ladyjacks secure their 29th postseason appearance in school history. Most recently, SFA won three games to reach the championship game of the Women’s Basketball Invitational last season.

SFA was one of 32 teams that earned an automatic berth to the 18th annual postseason WNIT, while the remaining 32 teams in the field were given at-large bids on Monday evening following the NCAA Tournament Selection Show. The Ladyjacks will be looking for their first win in the WNIT since SFA won two games in the tournament following the 1987 regular season.

The Ladyjacks also appeared in the WNIT in 2007 and 2010, both ending with first round exits.

Brandon Schneider’s team earns the automatic inclusion after his squad won the 2015 Southland Conference regular season title with a league record of 16-2 - the best conference record for the program in 13 years. The top-seeded Ladyjacks fell to Houston Baptist in the semifinals of the Southland Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon, coming two wins shy of reaching the NCAA Tournament for the 18th time in program history.

The Horned Frogs of TCU earn their 13th postseason appearance in the last 15 years after finishing tied for third in the Big 12 standings. The squad finished the regular season with a 9-9 mark in league play and enter Thursday’s matchup with a 17-13 record overall.
